Belize - Belize City and out

The last couple of nights we spent in Belize City, which is the largest city in the country and really the only one. We drove around the place for a while, and had a good look. The reason we drove rather than walked is simply that it was too hot. By the waterfront it was very pleasant in the breeze, but between the buildings and asphalt it was impossible to move around. There is a lot of development going on and the country is putting effort into making tourism the largest income earner.
The place is beautiful in spots, and they have many activities listed for the tourist industry. To us they have a way to go until it is a full offering, but they had to start somewhere and they have been into it for only some years. Out tip is for you to look up the Belize Tourist Board if you feel tempted to go. They insist that you list your interests and then choose where to go based on that.
It felt like the area from the south into Belize City was less developed than going north. Anything that is not flown into the country goes from Mexico (mainly the route through the Chetumal border crossing) which makes the traffic heavier. It is all relative, we could drive for long periods without any other traffic around.
We didn't see anything dangerous, but the locals said that they avoid going down alley ways or being out alone late at night. It is relatively expensive to stay in Belize.
We left Belize City to carry on to Mexico.
