On the road to Belém

Driving in Brazil is tough, the road is full of trucks - everywhere and all the time. Anything that is needed for supplies across the country goes on a truck. They are big, too, up to 30 meters long.
Nature is very varied and beautiful. The weather changes all the time. We have enjoyed the trip a lot even though it has been scary at times. Here comes some photos from the drive from Belo Horizonte to Belém.
We had our only two encounters with the Brazilian police on this route. The first one was strange in that it never became clear what they really wanted. The second was the standard wanting to see driver's license and car papers. The distance from Belo Horizonte to Belém is some 2,744km, and it took a few days to get there. Brazil is vast!
On the way through Brazil we had reviewed and changed the route to take a few times, gathering more accurate information as we moved along. In the end we settled for our original plan, and from Belém to the border with French Guiana we now had a ferry ride and a long drive through the Amazonas in the rainy season. This distance is known for having tractors patrolling to pull cars out when they get stuck in the mud. We'll tell how it went in the next post.
