The first leg may take us to Nicaragua, although there are many places in Costa Rica where to stop on the way. So far we have established that we will use the Las Tablillas border crossing into Nicaragua.
We have been waiting to go now for a while, and it may take a few more days. There are so many details to cover to go on a trip like ours, and international car insurance has proven to a tough nut to crack. On Sunday 2 February 2025 we left San José and started the trip around Central America. We drove to Los Chiles and spent the first night there. We met some new friends on the way.
Passing the border between Costa Rica and Nicaragua was a drama in two acts. We passed at Las Tablillas, there weren't many other travellers and the whole process took a couple of hours.
Our first stop in Nicaragua is San Carlos. It is by a lake, and bustling with all sorts of activities.
